Defeating A Dragon Empty Defeating A Dragon

Kanana examined the marking in the dirt. Footprint, big. She straightened, her back popping in protest, her child kicking from within her belly. She ignored these things, and took off into the air yet again. It didn't take long for her to find the purely white dragon, scales glittering like diamonds. It was larger than Kanana in both height and width, but she could tell it was a hatchling. She wasn't hoping to kill; she just wanted a few scales. She sent an arrow whizzing at it, where it hit a scale and chinked right off. She was only hoping to get the creature's attention, no more.

The small dragon reared her beautiful head to look at Kanana, bright orange eyes flaring. A cramp in Kanana's abdomen took her breath away for a second, but then she spiraled down at the thing, dagger in hand. She landed on the dragon's back, trying to scrape off one of the smaller scales. The dragon was angry, and she tried to buck Kanana off. She held on for dear life, grabbing a spine at the nape of the beast's neck. The constant thrashing of the creature was making her feel sick, but she tried to ignore it and began trying to scrape one of the smaller scales off of the dragon.

The dragon didn't like that. She let out a roar, loud and frightening, although compared to that of an actual full-sized dragon, it was small and weak. The sound of enormous wings flapping filled Kanana with alarm, and she quickly jumped off of the creature's back, ducking behind some trees, holding her breath. She felt something large and heavy land with a thud, the ground shaking. She didn't look; she was frozen with fear. She'd never admit it, but this was terrifying.

She could hear the great beast snuffling around, watching the reflection of the white dragon, although there were a few green lights here and there. Finally, in a surge of bravery, she looked around the tree to get a look. What she saw took her breath away, and she had to remember how to breathe for a moment.

The dragon was larger than Noro Palace, absolutely enormous. His foot was the size of Noro Laboratories, and she continued looking up. It's thigh was as thick as the Helios Tower, and just as long. The wings....God, the wings, they were immense and beautiful. The dragon was a bright green, and Kanana spotted the diamond-like dragon hidden behind the green dragon's leg.

The great dragon let out a roar, and Kanana could sense his fury. She hadn't thought to check if there were more dragons in the area...IDIOT! she cursed herself, wishing she'd been more thorough.

The ground quaked as the green one, the emerald dragon, began walking away. She sighed in relief when she saw the white one still in the clearing. The dragon was curled up, nuzzling her wings with her snout. Kanana came out of the shadows, deciding to try the "kinder" approach. "H-Hello..." she murmured, trying to appear calm.

The dragon turned her head to look at Kanana, and Kanana stopped immediately. Her head was crested in beautiful spines and scales, looking rather like a crown. The dragon then apparently decided that Kanana wasn't worth her time, for she began nuzzling her wings yet again. Something shiny fell from the wing, and Kanana's breath caught in her throat. She took a few steps closer--stopped because the dragon was watching her--and examined it. It was a scale...a single scale, the size of Kanana's hand.

"I'm just going to...grab that..." she said softly, stepping nearer the dragon. The diamond creature let out a warning growl, orange eyes glaring with distrust. "Please," Kanana said, although her voice was different. It was low, calm, soothing, a voice she only used when Kiwa was upset. It lacked the authoritative command of her voice when she addressed others. Instead, she began speaking in quiet earnest to the dragon. This was her last chance.

"He'll die if I don't get it...please, I'm sorry I tried to hurt you, but he needs it..." Kanana continued, still edging closer and closer to the dragon. The diamond creature continued watching, but allowed her to pass. The dragon did not appear to care that Kanana was there any longer, ruffling her leathery wings against her scaly back. Kanana sighed in relief and bent over, grabbing the scale.

As soon as her fingertips touched the scale, the small dragon let out that same piercing cry, and Kanana lifted off of the ground, flying straight for home. Looking at the crescent of the mountain, she could see that the great green dragon was back, high above the trees. He let out an angry roar after her, launching into the air.

She could feel the wind at her back, the dragon buffeting her with his great flaps. She frantically stowed the scale in her pack, strapped her spear to her back, and flew as fast as she possibly could. Her child kicked and stirred from within her, causing a cramp, and she dropped a few inches in altitude before being about to grit her teeth past the pain and continue flying straight.

Once she was about halfway down the mountain, the dragon stopped chasing her. It let out a beastly roar, chilling Kanana's blood, but she didn't dare stop. Sweat was on her brow, and she felt faint, but she had to get to the castle.

It came into view, and she landed in the library, and began running to Jareth's room.
